Food proves not to be a deterrent for canines.
A canine with the Yuma Sector Border Patrol sniffed out packages of fentanyl hidden within breakfast burritos recently at an immigration checkpoint recently. The male driver of an SUV was directed to secondary inspection by the canine handler after being alerted by his canine partner. The packages of fentanyl pills, that weighed a total of five pounds, were discovered within the burritos located inside a backpack. The estimated street value was almost $60,000. The driver was arrested and the drugs seized.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection stated in a release, “Smugglers are under the false assumption that they can disguise drugs within food to throw off canines and their handlers. On the contrary, canines have the ability to detect a target odor among a myriad of other odors.”
